A police officer was injured following an accidental shooting during an operation to restrain a suspected armed man at Kabaa Market in Mwala Sub-County, Machakos County.

According to police, a man alerted police about a man in a local bar, identified only as “Botswana,” who was suspected to be armed with a pistol on April 11 night.

Police officers from Kabaa Police Post who were on foot patrol, responded to the report and proceeded to the bar accompanied by the informant.

Upon arrival, the officers attempted to restrain the suspect, who turned violent. The informant, a licensed firearm holder, joined the officers in an effort to subdue him.

During the struggle, the suspect reportedly struck the informant’s right hand, causing him to accidentally discharge one round.

The bullet struck one of the officers on the left leg below the knee.

The suspect was eventually subdued. A subsequent search revealed that the alleged weapon was not a firearm but a metallic hammer tucked in his waistband.

The injured officer was rushed to Machakos Level 5 Hospital, where he is receiving treatment.

The firearm used in the incident—a Glock pistol loaded with 12 rounds of 9mm ammunition—has since been secured and placed in the armoury alongside the recovered hammer as investigations continue.

And police in Marsabit County are investigating a suspected suicide incident after a man was found dead with a gunshot wound in Mlima Shaba area.

Police officers responded to information about a shooting incident within the area and found the body of a 46-year-old man identified as Galma Guyo Dida lying in a pool of blood.

Preliminary findings indicate that the deceased sustained a gunshot wound to the chest, with the bullet exiting through his back.

An AK-47 rifle, whose serial number was not immediately visible, was recovered at the scene. The weapon was loaded with a magazine containing 22 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition.

The scene was processed and documented by investigators, and the body was moved to Marsabit County Referral Hospital mortuary, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.

Police have launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident, with the case currently being handled by DCI Marsabit Central.
