    CS Matiang’i, Mucheru To Face Contempt Of Court Charges For Defying Orders On Media Switch off

    The court has rejected an application by the communication authority to set aside the contempt of court orders against the government officials.

    The lawyer cited compliance by the said government after the media houses  that had been switched off. the court had ordered Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i and his ICT counterpart Joe Mucheru be cited for contempt of court for failing to obey the court’s orders to restore signals of shut TV stations.

    The lawyer said that the orders should be set aside because the stations had since been switched on and there was no purpose for the the contempt of court orders to still proceed.

    The court rejected the applications to have the orders set aside saying that the said government officials. Justice Chacha Mwita said that they had to present themselves to explain the technical hitches that led to the communication authority not to obey court orders.

    “The court would want to hear the alleged technical hitches which resulted to non compliance of the court orders”,Justice Chacha Mwita said in his ruling.

    Okiya Omtata had filed a case to petition the communication authority to switch on the TV stations  after they had been switched off following the swearing ceremony of Raila Odinga.

    The chief justice had indicated to all that court orders were not a favor but a civic obligation.
