    Siblings

Curren$y has an older brother named Jisaidie Hicks, who performs under the stage name Mr. Marcelo.

Mr. Marcelo is also a rapper from New Orleans, raised in the Magnolia Projects, and he was briefly signed to No Limit Records in the early 2000s.

The two share a close familial bond rooted in their shared upbringing in the city’s music-rich environment.

Mr. Marcelo had been active in the local scene before Curren$y’s rise.

    Career

Curren$y’s career began in the early 2000s when he signed with Master P’s No Limit Records as a late addition to the group 504 Boyz, appearing on projects like their 2002 album Ballers.

He later moved to Cash Money Records and Young Money Entertainment in the mid-2000s.

During this time he contributed to Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter II and released tracks like “Where da Cash At.” He later departed without a full solo album due to creative differences.

In 2007, he co-founded Fly Society with skateboarder Terry Kennedy, initially as a clothing brand that expanded into music.

By 2009, he embraced independence, dropping his debut album This Ain’t No Mixtape and following it with Jet Files.

His breakthrough came with the Pilot Talk series starting in 2010 under Damon Dash’s DD172 imprint.

The series showcased his signature style and earned critical praise. He later founded his own label, Jet Life Recordings.

He released projects like Weekend at Burnie’s (2011) on Warner Records and The Stoned Immaculate (2012).

Later works included Pilot Talk III (2015) and Canal Street Confidential (2015).

Known for his high volume of releases, over ten studio albums, numerous EPs, and dozens of mixtapes, Curren$y has collaborated with artists like Wiz Khalifa, 2 Chainz, Mac Miller, and The Alchemist.

He also built Jet Life into a collective featuring rappers such as Young Roddy and Trademark da Skydiver.

His 2015 single “Bottom of the Bottle” featuring Lil Wayne and August Alsina marked his entry on the Billboard Hot 100.

Even into the 2020s, he continues releasing music independently. He maintains a cult following through consistent output and a focus on artistic freedom over mainstream commercial pressures.

    Accolades

While Curren$y has not amassed traditional major awards like Grammys, his impact lies in his influence within hip-hop’s underground and independent scenes.

His album The Stoned Immaculate (2012) peaked at number eight on the Billboard 200.

This marked a significant commercial high point during his brief major-label stint.

Tracks like “Bottom of the Bottle” achieved chart success. Projects such as Covert Coup (with The Alchemist) and the Pilot Talk series are widely regarded as classics among fans and critics for their production quality and lyrical consistency.

He has earned respect for his prolificacy-releasing multiple projects annually.
