Doctors defend appeal to President over alleged crisis at Nairobi Hospital

A section of doctors at The Nairobi Hospital issued a detailed statement defending their decision to seek the intervention of William Ruto, saying the move was necessary to save the 70-year-old medical institution from financial collapse and governance failures.

In a statement released Monday, the doctors said the hospital—situated on 21.8 acres of public land held in trust for healthcare purposes—is not an ordinary private facility but a national institution that has served Kenyans and regional patients for decades.

The facility has historically treated prominent figures including Kenya’s founding president Jomo Kenyatta and former president Daniel Arap Moi, while also providing services to international staff through a dedicated wing serving organizations such as the United Nations.

According to the doctors, their concerns about alleged mismanagement began in March 2025, when they reported the matter to Head of Public Service Felix Koskei.

The complaint detailed alleged financial impropriety and manipulation of the hospital’s membership register by the board. The matter was later referred to the Attorney General, who obtained search and seizure warrants under Section 800 of the Companies Act, leading to the recovery of documents said to be central to ongoing criminal investigations.

Some of the documents, the doctors claim, were recovered from hidden compartments in the company secretary’s office, while others were retrieved from an incinerator where they were allegedly being destroyed.

Later in November 2025, the doctors sought the intervention of Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale over what they described as continued governance failures and an insurance boycott that had severely affected hospital operations.

The doctors also accused the hospital leadership of defying High Court orders issued in Milimani High Court Civil Case No. E293 of 2025.

They said Justice Prof. (Dr.) Sifuna had issued conservatory orders on November 5, 2025, restraining the hospital’s board, CEO and company secretary from accessing certain financial instruments, convening board meetings, or initiating new capital projects pending the determination of the case.

According to the statement, those orders remain in force but are allegedly being ignored by the hospital leadership.

The doctors further alleged that the hospital is facing severe financial distress.

They claim audited financial statements show losses exceeding Sh3 billion, including a Sh2 billion deficit in 2024 alone, while outstanding supplier debts have reportedly surpassed Sh4 billion.

The statement also raised concerns over Sh9.677 billion in accumulated depreciation funds, claiming only Sh572 million remained in cash or cash equivalents as of December 2024.

Legal costs have also surged, with professional and legal fees reportedly rising from Sh390 million in 2023 to more than Sh680 million in 2024, amid numerous court cases involving the institution.

Doctors also alleged that the board attempted to manipulate the hospital’s governance by adding 333 individuals to the members’ register through a single Sh5 million payment made by Anne Bosibori Omari, allegedly without proper nomination or vetting procedures.

They claim the move was intended to influence voting and entrench the current leadership.

    Arrest of senior doctor

The doctors also addressed the recent arrest of veteran obstetrician and gynaecologist Job Obwaka, saying he should be cleared of wrongdoing.

They argued that Obwaka was not a member of the hospital’s board of directors and was not involved in the alleged manipulation of the membership register, describing his arrest as a mistake.

Doctors insist hospital must be saved

In their statement, the doctors insisted their actions are not politically motivated but aimed at protecting a critical healthcare institution.

“We are doctors, not politicians. We have taken an oath to save lives, and that includes saving the institution that enables us to serve Kenyans,” the statement read.

They called for accountability within the hospital’s leadership, urging board members implicated in the alleged mismanagement to resign or be removed.

“The Nairobi Hospital must be saved—not for any individual or political interest, but for the thousands of patients who depend on it,” the doctors said.
