The long-awaited dualling of the 170-kilometre Rironi–Naivasha–Mau Summit highway is set to commence on November 28, 2025, marking a major breakthrough for one of the busiest segments of the Northern Corridor.

The project is expected to significantly ease transport between Nairobi and western Kenya, a region that has suffered decades of heavy traffic congestion, prolonged delays, and frequent road accidents. Government officials say the upgrade will improve the movement of goods and passengers, boosting trade and regional connectivity.

On the same day, the government will also break ground for the 58-kilometre Rironi–Maai Mahiu–Naivasha road dualling, opening new transport and investment opportunities along a key route serving the southern part of the country.

Ahead of the launch, President William Ruto met with Zhang Bingman, President of China Communications Construction Company (CCCC), at State House, Nairobi.

A subsidiary of CCCC — China Roads and Bridges Corporation (CRBC) — has been contracted to construct the new highway.

President Ruto lauded the partnership, crediting Kenya’s infrastructure progress to long-standing cooperation with China and Chinese companies.

He noted that collaboration between the two countries has delivered several flagship projects, including the Standard Gauge Railway, the Nairobi Expressway and multiple major road networks.

Ruto added that other China-backed projects are currently underway, among them the Talanta Sports City, 21 stadiums across various counties, the Bomas Convention Centre and the Lamu–Ijara–Garissa road.

“Infrastructure development in our country has made a huge leap forward courtesy of the strong and deep relations between Kenya and China, and Chinese companies,” Ruto said.

Future projects in the pipeline include the extension of the railway to Kisumu and Malaba, as well as the construction of the Galana Dam in Tana River County.

The dualling of the Rironi–Naivasha–Mau Summit and Rironi–Maai Mahiu–Naivasha roads is anticipated to provide lasting relief to road users and enhance economic activity along one of Kenya’s most important transport corridors.
