Erik Karlsson is a Swedish professional ice hockey defenceman widely regarded as one of the most dynamic and offensive-minded blueliners in NHL history.
Born on May 31, 1990, in Landsbro, Sweden, he has earned a reputation for his exceptional skating, puck-moving ability, and vision from the back end.
Drafted 15th overall by the Ottawa Senators in 2008, Karlsson has played for the Senators, San Jose Sharks, and currently the Pittsburgh Penguins, where he continues to contribute at a high level despite the physical demands of the position.
Siblings
Erik has at least two brothers, namely Pelle Karlsson, born February 12, 1992, who is also involved in ice hockey, and Anton Karlsson, a younger brother who has played professionally, including in Sweden’s HockeyAllsvenskan with Modo Hockey.
The siblings shared a close bond forged through backyard games and local rinks, which helped nurture Erik’s passion and skill for the sport from an early age.
Career
Karlsson’s journey to the NHL began in his native Sweden, where he developed through the Frölunda HC system and impressed with his offensive instincts as a defenceman.

After being selected by Ottawa in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, he made his NHL debut in the 2009-10 season and quickly emerged as a star.
He spent over a decade with the Senators, serving as team captain and leading the club’s blueline during some of its most competitive years, including a run to the 2017 Eastern Conference Final.
In 2018, he was traded to the San Jose Sharks in a blockbuster deal, where he continued to produce offensively before signing with the Pittsburgh Penguins as a free agent in 2023.
Known for his end-to-end rushes and ability to dictate play from the blue line, Karlsson has adapted to different systems while maintaining his creativity.
