Former Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati was Friday grilled by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) over the alleged theft of public funds in the devolved unit during his tenure.
Wangamati is accused of awarding road construction tenders worth Sh70 million to companies linked to him and his five brothers during the financial years 2017/18 and 2021/22.
Wangamati appeared before investigators at EACC’s Regional Offices in Bungoma where he recorded a statement.
The ex-Governor is under investigation alongside Webuye West Member of Parliament Daniel Wanyama, who recorded his statement at EACC headquarters in Nairobi on Tuesday, April 1, 2025.
The investigation centers on accusations of theft of public funds within the Bungoma County Government.
The allegations relate to the irregular award of tenders for road construction worth Sh70,205,882 to companies linked to both Wanyama and Wangamati.
The tenders were reportedly awarded during the 2017/18-2021/22 financial years.
They have denied any wrong doing in the tender.
Wangamati, who served as the second Bungoma Governor was last year appointed to chair the Public Service Superannuation Fund Board of Trustees EACC said it continues its efforts to uncover the full extent of the alleged corruption within the county government.
“The outcome of the investigation will inform appropriate action, which may include criminal prosecution of any persons found culpable and recovery of lost public funds,” the commission said.
