Ex-Equity chief cash officer arrested over Sh6 million heist in Murang’a

Chaos As 13 Egyptians Resist Arrest In Bungoma Town

A former chief cash officer at the Equity Bank in Muranga Branch was Thursday arrested in a fraud probe involving Sh6 million.

Detectives said the female employee was linked to the heist of the cash where a customer claimed he had lost the money. The matter was reported on August 28, 2025 at the local police station.

This prompted a probe within the bank and by the police.

The suspect was the chief cash officer at Equity Bank Muranga branch at the time of the incident.

She resigned and disappeared after being interrogated by the bank’s internal security.

It was until October 9, 2025 when she was arrested in Makuyu town and booked for further grilling.

Police said they found her with 10 ATM cards, two Equity Bank cheque books, open cheques bank slips,15 closed bank cheque slips and 10 letters.

The investigators said they plan to charge the former manager with fraud. They are investigating her past activities to establish if she was involved in any such incidents, officials said.

This is the latest such incident in the industry where insiders are involved in fraud. The Banking Fraud Investigations Unit has been working with the institutions and Central Bank to address the menace.

In some incidents, the suspects are never arrested for justice. This leaves many customers exposed and in losses.

Police have vowed to pursue all reported fraud cases for justice and compensation, where possible.

The banks have been advised to always install applications to ensure safety of cash at all times. This includes the use of technology at large, which needs to be updated all the time.

Most banks have internal investigations units that trace such incidents and make necessary steps to address them amid a surge.
