Saturday was a massive day for Kenya in as far as sports and more specifically football and boxing are concerned.

To kick-off the beautiful day, Kenya’s national football team, Harambee Stars, faced Black Stars of Ghana in a crunch Afcon 2019 qualifier at the Kasarani Stadium.

In the absence of skipper Victor Wanyama and his deputy David Owino, who were ruled out with injuries, Musa Mohammed was handed the armband.

The former Gor Mahia defender who is currently with Nkana FC of Zambia was called upon to carry the weight of a nation in a match that most pundits predicted a whitewash for them.

According to the latest FIFA ranking, Ghana is placed 45th, 67 places above Kenya in the global roll.

Kenya has never qualified for the Afcon since Tunisia 2004 while Ghana, who are four-time champions, are gunning for an eighth straight qualification.

Despite the odds, Musa led his troops to edge out the West Africans 1-0 and revive their campaign, having lost their first qualifier to Sierra Leone.

The win was historic as Kenya and Ghana were clashing for the very first time in a competitive match.

Well done and a great show #HarambeeStars. You gave us a great weekend. Onward to the Africa Cup of Nations. Congratulations to the #BlackStars of Ghana. Later in the evening Musa was at the KICC to cheer his elder sister Fatuma Zarika in defending her WBC Super Bantam Weight Championship against Mexican Mercado.

Sponsored by gaming firm Sportpesa, the bout proved to be one of the biggest ever in terms of attendance as Kenyans gathered to cheer one of their own to glory.

It was a nice sight to behold as Musa carried the belt to the ring.
