Federation of Women Lawyers (Fida) and Center for Reproductive rights have joined hands in calling for the release of 12 patients detained for over ten days by the Nairobi Women’s hospital(Ongata Rongai branch)

The patients have been detained by the hospital over inability to settle their medical bills, a plight that was highlighted on a local TV station.

Fida’s Executive director Teresa Omondi termed the detention as “against the law” and urged the Ministry of health embrace its role and protect patients from hospital detentions and come up with clear guidance on waivers.

Ms. Omondi said the hospital  must release those men and women and “apologize to them immediately,” according to a local business daily.
