Fire Destroys Property Worth Millions At Gikomba Market (Photos)
Kenyans pick through second-hand clothes at the vast Gikomba street-market September 6, 2005. Despite widespread poverty across the east African nation of 32 million people, the last two decades have seen a roaring success in second-hand clothes trade known in local Swahili as "mitumba." The fire is said to have started at the fish and groceries section before spreading to other parts of the market and buildings close by.
The congestion has slowed down the firefighters efforts to put out the 3 am fire.
The National Disaster Management Unit is appealing to people and/ companies with fire engines and water boosters to help put out the fire.
Property worth millions has already been lost in the inferno.
