At least five people died after a gold mine collapsed in Longorokomol Larga, Pokot North Sub-County, West Pokot County.
The incident occurred on Friday, October 2, 2026, police said.
According to police, the mine caved in and buried several people who were inside the site.
Five bodies had been retrieved by the time of the report, while three other people were rescued alive.
Rescue operations were ongoing as authorities feared that more people could still be trapped beneath the rubble.

Police and local authorities were coordinating the rescue efforts as investigations into the cause of the mine collapse continued.
This is the latest such incident to happen at gold mine site amid calls for general safety for all workers. Such deaths have been common in the past days.

Elsewhere, a 52-year-old man died after slipping and falling into a gold mining pit in Odondo area, Gem West Location, Rangwe Sub-County, Homa Bay County.
The incident was reported on Thursday, October 2, 2026, prompting officers to visit the scene.
The man, identified as George Okumu Otieno, had already been retrieved from the mining pit and taken to St Lawrence Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police said the deceased’s body was later transferred to Obwanda Mortuary, where physical injuries were observed on the head and upper abdomen.
The body has been preserved at the mortuary pending a postmortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.
Police have commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.
