Police are investigating a tragic incident that left a five-year-old boy dead after a fire flattened their house in Migori Town.

The incident happened in the Aroso area on Sunday January 4 night, police said. The minor was sleeping with his sister in the house when the fire broke out spreading fast. The two had lit a candle for light following a power blackout when the fire broke out, police and locals said.

The candle was left burning on a set of books which is believed to have caused the fire.

The fire killed the boy as the locals tried to contain the spread. Police said the remains were moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy and other procedures.

Elsewhere in Ndiru, Rangwe, Homa Bay County, a 12-year-old girl drowned in a pool of water where she and others had gone to swim.

The site was an abandoned sand quarry that had gathered water. Local children in South Kagan venture there for swimming sessions. On Sunday evening, the girl who was a pupil at Nyaluya Primary School in grade seven drowned as she and other children swam there.

The body was retrieved to the mortuary pending an autopsy.

Meanwhile, a man was stoned to death in an incident in Githioro, Nakuru County.

The victim was accused of stealing a 52 inch tv set, two bags of maize flour and assorted school shopping from a home in the area.

The man was stoned to death before police arrived at the scene. Police said his two accomplices managed to escape on a motorcycle.

Police discourage mob lynching cases and want suspects to be surrendered to authorities for processing. Such cases have been on the rise amid calls for action to tame the trend even as pundits argue it is a sign of hopelessness among some populace on the rule of law. Police say they are there to implement the law.
