Flood death toll rises to 84 as rescue efforts intensify in Kenya

The death toll from ongoing heavy rains across the country has risen to 84, as emergency response teams intensify search and rescue operations in affected regions.

In a statement, the National Police Service (NPS) said its officers, working jointly with other government agencies, are on the ground responding to emergencies caused by widespread flooding.

Nairobi has recorded the highest number of fatalities at 37, making it the hardest-hit region.
The Eastern region follows with 21 deaths, while the Rift Valley has reported eight. The Nyanza region has recorded seven fatalities, the Coast region five, and Central region three.

Authorities also reported significant displacement, with approximately 2,690 families forced to flee their homes due to flash floods that have swept through several parts of the country.
The floods have caused extensive damage to infrastructure and property.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned that the heavy rains are expected to persist, raising concerns of further flooding and destruction.

Members of the public have been urged to remain vigilant, avoid flood-prone areas, and strictly follow safety advisories issued by relevant authorities.

Emergency teams remain on high alert, with the NPS reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding lives and property.
The public has been encouraged to report emergencies through toll-free numbers 999, 911, and 112, or via the Fichua Kwa DCI hotline.

NPS Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga emphasized that coordinated efforts among agencies will continue to ensure swift response to distress situations as the country grapples with the ongoing severe weather.
