Flooding at South C Substation causes power outage in several Nairobi estates

Electricity supply was disrupted in several parts of Nairobi after heavy overnight rains caused flooding at a key power facility.
Kenya Power said the downpour that swept across the city on Friday night flooded the South C Substation after part of its boundary wall collapsed, affecting power distribution to multiple estates.
The outage has impacted areas including South B, South C, Nairobi West, Madaraka Estate, Strathmore, Dam Estate, Lang’ata, Wilson Airport, Carnivore area, Kenyatta Market, Ngumo Estate, Industrial Area and Uhuru Gardens.
The utility firm said its engineers have already been deployed to the affected site to assess the extent of the damage to electrical equipment and begin restoration work.
“Our engineers are on site carefully assessing the damage to electrical equipment and working tirelessly to carry out the necessary tests and repairs,” the company said in a statement.
Kenya Power added that efforts are underway to minimise the disruption by switching some customers to adjacent substations where possible.
The company apologised to affected customers for the inconvenience and urged the public to report any electricity-related incidents through its customer service code *977#.
The power outage comes as parts of Nairobi continue to grapple with the effects of heavy rainfall that triggered flooding in several areas across the city.
At least 11 bodies had by Saturday afternoon been recovered while several remained unaccounted for following the rains. More than 100 cars were damaged in the flooding reported, officials said.
