Former President Moi’s Physician David Silverstein Dies
Dr David Silverstein, the long-serving personal physician to Kenya’s late retired President Daniel arap Moi, has died.
The Moi family confirmed his death, mourning him as a compassionate doctor who left a lasting impression on those he treated.
In a statement, KANU chairman Gideon Moi described Dr Silverstein as a physician who treated his father with exceptional attention to detail, empathy and dignity.
“To him, Mzee Moi was not merely a client. He was a human being whose health, dignity and wellbeing mattered deeply to him,” Moi said.
He said Dr Silverstein took time to listen, understand and care for his patients, bringing warmth and humanity to his medical practice.
“His care and friendship will always be remembered with gratitude,” Gideon added.
He extended his condolences to Dr Silverstein’s family, led by his wife, Channa Commanday, and thanked them for allowing the physician to care for Moi throughout his health journey.
Beyond his role as Moi’s personal doctor, Dr Silverstein was also associated with the development of cardiac care in Kenya, having helped establish the first cardiac laboratory at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).
His death marks the loss of a physician remembered for his contribution to medicine and his service to one of Kenya’s longest-serving presidents.
