The first African Secretary General to the United Nations , Kofi Annan will receive a state burial on 13 September in Accra, Ghana.

The Ghanian President, Nana Akufo-Addo made the announcement after meeting with Kofi Annan’s family.

“I think that the Ghanaian people expect that a man of his stature and record should be given full honours by the state of Ghana, so I have decreed that he should have a state funeral.” he said

The former SG passed away on Saturday, August 18 in Bern, Switzerland after a short illness.

He will be laid to rest at the new military cemetery at Burma Camp, in Accra Ghana.

The president assured the family that the state will take care of the burial arrangements and expenses.

“This is a state funeral so the responsibility for the arrangements are that of the Ghanaian state. Your bid is to mourn but you will not have any of the financial burdens involved in organizing such a thing; that will be borne by the state of Ghana,” he told Kofi Annan’s family.

Different world leaders are expected to attend the funeral ceremony.
