The driver reported to have been recklessly driving the 62-seater that crashed at Fort Ternan is reported to have been an elderly 72 year old man, identified as Lucas.

From witness reports, Lucas started the journey well but was called back to go and carry more passengers from a different bus.

As soon as they passed Naivasha Lucas started overspeeding.

Passengers say that the bus crew were very arrogant and were rude to passengers when they complained about the driver’s speed and overloading.

They were told to go and buy their own cars if they did not like the service being offered by the bus company.

The 72 year old is also said to have had no reliever since he had been driving through the day from Kisumu to Nairobi, arriving at 5 PM in the evening.

Soon after, he started another long distant journey to Western, once again.

Lucas had worked with the bus company for seven years and is said to have been very familiar with the routes.

Despite the road missing proper land marks and road signs, witnesses suspect that the driver may have been suffering from fatigue and lack of enough sleep, contributing heavily to the cause of the accident.

The bus company is also accused of failing to obtain a night travel license.

55 people were killed in the crash and 16 others nursing injuries at Kericho County Referral Hospital and Fort Ternan Sub-County Hospital.
