Four suspects in robbery of American citizen detained for 14 days pending probe

Four men who were arrested over the robbery incident of an American Citizen appeared in court on Monday where a magistrate allowed police to detain them for 14 days pending a probe.

The four appeared in court on a miscellaneous application for custodial orders to complete the investigations into the claims of robbery with violence.

The Shanzu court ordered that the case be mentioned on April 27, 2026.

The suspects were later positively identified at a parade at a local police station by the complainant as the ones who attacked and robbed him.

Police revealed the suspects are also wanted in Kiambaa, Kiambu County for the offences of robbery with violence which occurred earlier this year.

They are said to have attacked an Austrian and a Cypriot.

They will be moved there for further processing.

The suspects, Bernard Mbusu, Isaac Kinoti Kobia, Evans Muthengi Mutaki and Kelvin Mwangi Njoroge were apprehended at an apartment in Ukunda, Kwale County after the robbery in Nyali, Mombasa on April 9.

The American had met a friend at a restaurant and decided to go to his room to rest because he was tired of noise that emanated from a neighbouring room in a short stay in Bamburi.

It was while at the friend’s house when four men stormed in and robbed him of his mobile phone, Sh14,000, USD1,400, 400 Euros, a laptop charger and swiped his card of USD1,600 before escaping.

The suspects have also been forensically linked to another robbery with violence incident in Watamu, Malindi Sub-County, police said.

A search at the residence led to the recovery of stolen items, including an HP laptop, mobile phones, assorted foreign currencies, multiple credit cards, cheque books from various banks and PDQ machines.

The scene was processed by CSI personnel, and the suspects, together with the recovered exhibits, are in custody at Nyali Police Station pending further investigations. They will also be brought to Nairobi to face murder charges, police said.

The suspects were also linked to the murder of a British national Campell Scott

The operation was conducted by DCI officers drawn from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CR&IB) Headquarters, working jointly with their counterparts drawn from SCCIO Nyali and SCCIO Msambweni (Ukunda) on Saturday, officials said..

They were wanted over the brutal murder of the Briton which occurred in February 2025.

Scott, from Dunfermline in Fife, was a senior director at the credit scoring firm FICO and had travelled to Nairobi for a conference prior to his disappearance.

He went missing after failing to meet with colleagues to deliver a presentation at the JW Marriott Hotel in the city’s Westlands area.

Scott was known to have visited the Havana nightclub the previous evening.

He had been taken to a property in the Pipeline area.

His body was later discovered in a pineapple sack with his hands bound.

A post-mortem examination into his death proved “inconclusive,” but pathologists said the injuries on his body were “too minor” to have resulted in his death.

Police initially arrested two men, a taxi driver and a nightclub waiter, believed to be among the last to see him alive.

Two other men were also arrested in Mombasa in connection with the case.

Police then launched an appeal to find three further men in connection with Scott’s death.

They were named as Benard Mbunga Mbusu and Alphonse Munyao Kilewa, also known as “Edu”.

The third man, Samuel Musembi Kamitu, has since died after being discovered unconscious at a friend’s house, police said.
