Frankie Banali was an American rock and roll drummer who had an estimated net worth of $10 million at the time of his death in 2020. He was best known as the longtime drummer for the heavy metal band Quiet Riot.

Banali played on the band’s breakthrough album Metal Health (1983), which became the first heavy metal album to reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200. In addition to his work with Quiet Riot, he also performed with the heavy metal band W.A.S.P. and collaborated with numerous rock artists throughout his career.

Early Life

Frankie Banali was born on November 14, 1951, in Queens, New York City, to Italian immigrant parents, Martha and Jack Banali.

He developed a passion for music early in life and eventually pursued a career as a drummer. In 1975, Banali moved to Los Angeles, where he spent several years playing in various bands while establishing himself in the local rock scene.

Career Beginnings

During the late 1970s, Banali performed with a number of groups in Los Angeles, including the rock band Steppenwolf.

He also worked as a session musician and contributed to recordings by other artists. Among the musicians he collaborated with was Billy Idol, further expanding his reputation as a skilled drummer in the rock industry.

Success with Quiet Riot

In 1982, Banali joined Quiet Riot, a band that had originally formed in 1973 but had broken up in 1980. The revived lineup initially included vocalist Kevin DuBrow, bassist Chuck Wright, and guitarist Carlos Cavazo. Wright was later replaced by bassist Rudy Sarzo.

After signing with Pasha Records, Quiet Riot achieved major commercial success with the 1983 album Metal Health. The record included the hit songs Cum On Feel the Noize and Metal Health (Bang Your Head).

The album became a worldwide hit, eventually selling more than 10 million copies and earning multi-platinum certification.

Quiet Riot followed this success with Condition Critical in 1984, which reached No. 15 on the Billboard 200. The band later released additional albums including QR III (1986) and QR (1988) before disbanding in 1989.

Quiet Riot Reunions and Later Work

Quiet Riot reunited in 1993 with Banali, Kevin DuBrow, and Carlos Cavazo, along with bassist Kenny Hillery. The band released the album Terrified.

Over the following years, the band experienced several lineup changes but continued releasing music, including Down to the Bone (1995), Alive and Well (1999), and Guilty Pleasures (2001).

Banali later reformed the band again in 2004 with Kevin DuBrow, Chuck Wright, and guitarist Alex Grossi, releasing the album Rehab in 2006.

After DuBrow’s death in 2007, Quiet Riot disbanded once more but returned in 2010 with Banali leading the group. The band continued releasing albums including Quiet Riot 10 (2014), Road Rage (2017), and Hollywood Cowboys (2019).

Work with W.A.S.P.

During the late 1980s, when Quiet Riot was experiencing internal challenges, Banali joined the band W.A.S.P. His first album with the group was The Headless Children (1989), which reached No. 48 on the Billboard 200.

He later performed on The Crimson Idol (1992) and remained involved in the band during various projects in the 1990s and early 2000s.

Other Musical Contributions

Throughout his career, Banali collaborated with several musicians and bands. He recorded music with groups and artists such as Hughes/Thrall, Billy Thorpe, Alex Masi, Heavy Bones, and Blackthorne.

Personal Life and Death

Banali married his first wife, Karen, in 1994, and the couple had a daughter named Ashley in 1997. Karen died of heart failure in 2009.

In 2015, Banali married Regina Russell Banali, a film producer, director, and actress.

In 2019, Banali revealed that he had been diagnosed with Pancreatic cancer, the same disease that had caused his father’s death decades earlier. After a 16-month battle with the illness, he died on August 20, 2020, at the age of 68.
