Education cabinet secretary Fred Matiang’i has said that the Ministry will stop the opening of satellite campuses in order to strengthen those are already in existence.

He admitted having closed several satellite universities that were opened outside the country including one in Rwanda on claims that it had been opened illegally.

The Education boss also said that the ministry would stop hiring of university staff  under the permanent and pensionable scheme adding that the staff (especially support staff) would be hired on contractual basis starting from the next financial year.

This comes even as lecturers have been on strike for the past three weeks seeking an implementation of the 2013-2017 collective bargaining agreement that was supposed to be implemented in March of this year.

There has been a looming crisis over labor issues in Kenya in the past year and all have been instigated by the government’s failure to implement collective bargaining agreements with the workers especially in sectors that have been partly devolved.
