Fredrik Aursnes is a Norwegian professional footballer born on 10 December 1995 in Hareid, Norway.
He primarily plays as a central midfielder but is versatile enough to operate as a winger or full-back on either flank.
He is known for his high work rate, stamina, defensive contributions, and ability to link play.
Aursnes currently plays for Portuguese Primeira Liga club Benfica, where he wears the number 8 and has served as captain, while also representing the Norway national team.
Siblings
Fredrik has an older brother named Georg Aursnes, whose full name is Georg Overvåg Aursnes.
Georg was born on 18 December 1976, although some sources report his birth year as around 1979.
Georg was a former professional footballer who began his career at Hareid IL before moving to IL Hødd in 1996.
He primarily featured as a central defender, having earlier started as a forward or midfielder.
He made over 300 appearances for Hødd between the mid-1990s and 2005, when he largely retired. He later made limited appearances for lower-level clubs such as Hareid and Hasundgot.
Georg took pride in Fredrik’s breakthrough at Hødd, including the young player’s role in the 2012 Norwegian Cup final.
Career
Aursnes started in the youth ranks at local club Hareid IL, making an early senior appearance there. He joined IL Hødd ahead of the 2012 season and debuted in the Norwegian First Division that April.
At just 16, he became a key part of Hødd’s sensational Norwegian Cup-winning campaign.
He started in the final victory over Tromsø. He became the youngest finalist and winner in the competition’s history.
He remained at Hødd until late 2015, accumulating over 100 league appearances.
In December 2015, he signed a multi-year deal with Molde FK.

At Molde, he developed into a reliable first-team player under managers including Ole Gunnar Solskjær.
Over roughly five and a half seasons, he made nearly 150 league appearances. He also scored regularly, notably enjoying a strong goal-scoring season in 2018.
He featured in European competitions during his time at Molde. He helped Molde win the 2019 Eliteserien title and the 2021 Norwegian Cup.
In August 2021, Aursnes transferred to Dutch side Feyenoord for a modest fee.
In his main season there, he played regularly in the Eredivisie.
He also contributed to the club’s run to the UEFA Europa Conference League final, where Feyenoord finished as runners-up.
A brief appearance early the following season preceded his move. On 24 August 2022, he joined Benfica on a five-year contract.
The contract was later extended toward 2029. Benfica reportedly paid around €13 million for his services.
He quickly established himself as a regular starter and versatile squad member.
He contributed to league and cup successes while featuring extensively in the Champions League and other European ties.
By mid-2026, he had surpassed 100 league appearances for the club.
Internationally, he made his Norway debut in a June 2021 friendly against Greece. He scored his first senior international goal in a 2023 European Championship qualifier against Cyprus.
He earned around 28 caps for Norway. He stepped back from international duty in 2024 due to workload concerns.
He returned to availability in 2026 and participated in the 2026 World Cup.
Accolades
With Hødd, he won the Norwegian Cup in 2012. At Molde, he claimed the Eliteserien title in 2019 and the Norwegian Cup in 2021.
With Feyenoord, he reached the 2021–22 UEFA Europa Conference League final as a runner-up. He was also part of the Feyenoord squad during their subsequent Eredivisie success.
At Benfica, he has won the Primeira Liga in the 2022–23 season. He also won the Taça da Liga in the 2024–25 season.
He has won the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira on multiple occasions, including in 2023 and 2025. His individual recognition includes selection in the Eredivisie Team of the Month in January 2022.
He was also selected in the Primeira Liga Team of the Year for the 2024–25 season. He won Benfica’s Cosme Damião Footballer of the Year award in 2025.
He has also been a regular participant in major European competitions. He represented Norway at the 2026 World Cup.
