Girl drowns in family well in Makueni

A 14-year-old girl drowned after falling into a family well while fetching water in Mbooni East, Makueni County.
The incident was reported on August 12, 2026, police said.
Police officers visited the scene and identified the deceased as a 14-year-old girl who was reported to have been living with epilepsy.
She had reportedly gone to fetch water from a family well located about 60 metres from their homestead when she fell into the well.
An eyewitness attempted to rescue her but was unsuccessful. Family members later joined the rescue effort and managed to retrieve the girl from the well.
A doctor was called to attend to her but confirmed that she had already died.
Police processed the scene and moved the body, which had no visible injuries, to Makueni Referral Hospital mortuary pending preservation and autopsy.
Elsewhere,a 10-year-old girl drowned in River Migori after she reportedly went swimming with her cousin in Migori County.
The body of the Grade Two pupil at Piny Jope Comprehensive School, was spotted floating in the river on Wednesday, August 12, 2026.
Police officers visited the scene, where members of the public had already retrieved the girl’s body from the river. Police said the body had no visible physical injuries.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Sarah had visited her aunt, identified as Rebecca, in Lichota Village on Tuesday.
On Wednesday morning, her aunt reportedly left home to attend church, leaving the victim and her son behind.
The two children are said to have later left the house and headed to River Migori to swim. She reportedly drowned while in the river.
Crime Scene Investigation officers processed and documented the scene before the body was moved to the Migori County Referral Hospital mortuary pending an autopsy.
Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding the drowning are ongoing.
And an unidentified young man aged between 19 and 23 years is feared to have drowned while bathing in River Mugruk in Kisumu West Sub-County.
The incident occurred at around 6pm on Thursday, August 13, 2026.
Police said they received a report from a member of the public that the man had drowned while taking a bath in the river.
Police visited the scene, where they found members of the public had retrieved the body from the river. The deceased was found naked and had not been identified by the time of the incident report.
Crime Scene Investigation officers documented the scene before the body was moved to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary for preservation pending autopsy and identification.
Police have appealed to members of the public who may have information that could help identify the deceased to report to the nearest police station.
