Government Releases Sh44.2 Billion to Schools Ahead of New Term

Parents and school administrators have received a boost after the government released capitation funds just days before schools reopen.

The Ministry of Education has disbursed Sh44.2 billion to public basic education institutions across the country for Term One of the 2026 academic year.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba announced the release, saying the funds will ensure schools are ready when learners report back on January 5, 2026.

Most of the money — Sh26 billion — has been allocated to Free Day Secondary Education. Free Day Junior School Education received Sh14.5 billion, while Free Primary Education was allocated Sh3.7 billion.

The funding comes as the country prepares for the first intake of Grade 10 learners into Senior Schools. These students are expected to report on January 12, 2026.

“The government remains committed to supporting learners and schools, in line with Article 53 of the Constitution, which guarantees every child the right to free and compulsory basic education,” CS Ogamba said.

The Ministry also clarified that fees for senior schools have not been increased. Government capitation for senior school learners will remain at Sh22,244 per student per year.

School heads have been warned to use the funds responsibly and not to charge parents unauthorized fees.

“Principals and head teachers must ensure proper use of these public funds and should not impose extra levies on parents,” the Cabinet Secretary said.
