Govt Issues Safety Alert as Heavy Short Rains Continue Across the Country

The government has issued a nationwide safety alert as heavy short rains continue to be experienced in many parts of the country. Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura said on Friday, October 31, 2025, that the authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have deployed response teams to affected areas.
Mwaura said the ongoing October–November–December rains are important for supporting agriculture and water supply, but also come with risks such as flash floods, slippery roads and landslides in some regions.
“The government is closely monitoring the ongoing short rains, which have brought moderate to heavy rainfall across several regions including the highlands, Nairobi and the coastal areas. While the rains are essential for agricultural recovery, citizens are advised to exercise caution to avoid risks associated with floods and landslides,” he said in the statement.
He called on residents to remain alert and take precautions. These include avoiding flooded roads and bridges, securing property against strong winds and following updates from the Kenya Meteorological Department and other official channels.
Mwaura assured the public that the government has already taken measures to protect lives and property. Multi-agency teams made up of the National Disaster Management Authority, security teams and county governments are on standby to assist with evacuation, clearing blocked roads and providing emergency support where necessary.
The government has also placed special focus on ensuring the ongoing Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations continue without disruption. Mwaura said contingency plans have been rolled out to support safe delivery of exam materials and student transport.
He noted that no major challenges have been reported so far, but urged school heads and parents to report any incidents immediately. He also reminded all residents, including visitors in the country, to follow public safety guidelines and instructions issued by authorities.
