Gwen Farrell, ‘MAS*H’ Actress and Trailblazing Boxing Referee, Dies at 93

Veteran actress Gwen Farrell, best known for her appearances on the classic television series M*A*S*H, has died at the age of 93.

Her son, Keith Farrell, confirmed that she passed away on Thursday in Los Angeles, according to reports. The cause of death has not been disclosed.

Farrell’s family announced her passing in an emotional tribute, describing her as a devoted grandmother and a source of strength and wisdom. “She was a guiding light and a steady source of love,” the family said, adding that her loss leaves “a deep void” in their lives.

A fundraising campaign has been launched to help cover funeral and memorial expenses.

Farrell appeared in 26 episodes of MASH*, which aired from 1972 to 1983, portraying multiple nursing roles across the series. The acclaimed war comedy remains one of the most influential shows in television history.

Beyond MASH*, her acting credits included appearances in Starsky & Hutch and the film Billy Jack Goes to Washington.

In a remarkable career shift, Farrell moved into boxing in 1980, becoming a referee in California at a time when few women held such roles. She went on to make history as the first woman to officiate a world title fight, earning widespread respect in the sport.

Her family praised her pioneering spirit, noting that she “broke barriers and proved that strength comes in many forms.”

Farrell was also the daughter of Lovie Yancey, founder of the Fatburger.

She leaves behind a legacy spanning both entertainment and sports, remembered for her versatility, resilience and lasting impact.
