Hélio Castroneves, born Hélio Alves de Castro Neves on May 10, 1975, in São Paulo, Brazil, is a renowned Brazilian professional race car driver whose career has spanned more than three decades.

Known for his infectious enthusiasm, charismatic personality, and signature victory celebrations, he has become one of the most beloved figures in American open-wheel racing.

Castroneves changed his surname to Castroneves in 2000 to avoid media misidentifications, a decision that coincided with the peak of his early successes.

Raised in a family immersed in the automotive world, he began his racing journey as a child, sneaking into stock car events organized by his father and eventually channeling that passion into a global career.

Beyond the track, Castroneves has ventured into entertainment, winning Season 5 of “Dancing with the Stars” in 2007, and he maintains a strong presence in philanthropy and business.

Now in his late 40s, he resides in South Florida with his long-time partner, Adriana Henao, and their daughter, Mikaella, while continuing to compete part-time in IndyCar and full-time in Brazil’s Stock Car Pro Series.

    Siblings

Hélio has and elder sister, Katiucia “Kati” Castroneves.

Born before Hélio in São Paulo, Kati has been a constant source of support since their early years in Ribeirão Preto, where the family relocated when Hélio was just two years old to pursue their father’s business opportunities in the ethanol industry.

Unlike Hélio, who pursued a high-octane path in motorsports, Kati has maintained a lower public profile but holds a crucial behind-the-scenes role as her brother’s business manager.

She oversees his endorsements, sponsorships, and day-to-day professional affairs, allowing Hélio to focus on racing and other ventures.

    Career

Castroneves’s racing odyssey began in earnest at age 12 with go-karts in Brazil, where he quickly dominated, clinching the 1989 Brazilian National Go-Kart Championship at just 14 and competing in two CIK World Cup events.

By 13, he left traditional schooling to homeschool and immerse himself fully in racing, progressing to Formula Chevrolet Brazil in 1991 and then the South American Formula Three series, where he finished runner-up in both 1993 and 1994.

His international breakthrough came in 1995 when he moved to England at 20 to join Paul Stewart Racing in the British Formula Three Championship, securing third place overall with multiple podiums.

Testing opportunities led him to the United States in 1996 for Indy Lights, where he honed his skills before entering the CART series in 1998 with Bettenhausen Motorsports and later ADR/Zanardi.

The pivotal shift occurred in 2000 when Castroneves joined the powerhouse Team Penske, replacing the late Greg Moore and immediately making an impact with a victory at the Detroit Grand Prix—his first in CART—and two more wins that season, finishing seventh in points.

As the open-wheel split evolved, Penske transitioned to the Indy Racing League (IRL) in 2002, but Castroneves had already etched his name in history with back-to-back Indianapolis 500 triumphs in 2001 and 2002, becoming the youngest driver to win consecutive editions and the first to claim the race in his initial two attempts.

He amassed 31 IndyCar wins over his career, including poles at iconic tracks, while venturing into endurance racing with Penske’s IMSA program from 2018 onward.

Highlights there include three straight Rolex 24 at Daytona victories from 2018 to 2020 and the 2020 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship title alongside Ricky Taylor.

In 2021, at 46, he staged a dramatic comeback with Meyer Shank Racing, winning a fourth Indy 500 in his debut for the team.

More recently, Castroneves debuted in NASCAR’s Cup Series at the 2025 Daytona 500 under Trackhouse Racing’s Project 91, expanding his legacy into stock cars.

Now a part-owner of Meyer Shank Racing, he races full-time in Brazil’s Stock Car Pro Series for A.Mattheis Motorsport, blending competition with mentorship for the next generation.

    Accolades

Castroneves’s trophy cabinet reflects a career of extraordinary consistency and clutch performances, headlined by his unprecedented four Indianapolis 500 victories in 2001, 2002, 2009, and 2021—tying him with legends A.J. Foyt, Rick Mears, and Al Unser Sr. as one of only four drivers to achieve this feat.

His 2001 win earned him Rookie of the Year honors, while his 2009 triumph, following a high-profile tax evasion acquittal, saw him claim pole position, the pit-stop competition, and the race itself, leading 66 laps.

In IndyCar, he tallied 31 victories, 50 poles (including four at Indy), and four runner-up finishes in the drivers’ championship (2002, 2008, 2013, and 2014), alongside 142 top-five finishes.

Early accolades include the inaugural Greg Moore Legacy Award in 2000 for embodying on-track talent and fan engagement, and the 2004 Scott Brayton Award for exemplifying racing spirit.

In endurance racing, he secured three consecutive Rolex 24 at Daytona wins (2018–2020) and the 2020 IMSA Daytona Prototype championship.

Off the track, his 2007 “Dancing with the Stars” victory showcased his versatility, and in February 2025, he was inducted into the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Class of 2025, cementing his status as a motorsport icon whose blend of speed, resilience, and charisma has inspired generations.
