A househelp was arrested for allegedly stealing a safe containing a pistol and a huge sum of money from her employer within Nairobi’s Kileleshwa area.
Police said Marydina Anupi John, 43 is the woman accused of stealing a sum of Sh348,000 and a pistol from her employer.
The pistol and the cash were however not recovered from her in the operation in Kawangware on Wednesday.
Detective Simon Ihaji from Kilimani Police Station told a Kibera Magistrate’s Court that the suspect allegedly broke into her employer’s bedroom, where she stole a safe containing the money in the form of Euros, US dollars, and Kenyan shillings.
The safe reportedly also contained other valuables, among them a Glock 19 pistol and two magazines with 44 rounds of ammunition.
“The amount was 1,950 USD, Ksh.5,000, 600 Euros, and other valuables, among them the gun with the serial number attached,” said Ihaji.
The incident is said to have happened on the evening of November 3 when her employer had stepped out of the house, only to find out that Marydina, a househelp who had served him for over two years, was nowhere to be found.
She had also switched off her phone.
However, it did not take long before she was trailed to a hideout within Kawangware.
Police now say there are other accomplices and have sought time to detain her as they pursue the missing loaded Glock pistol, which they say is in the wrong hands.
Principal Magistrate Margret Murage ordered the accused to remain in police custody until November 24, 2025.
“The respondent will therefore be detained at Kilimani Police Station for seven days only, until the 24th, and on this date, I expect a charge sheet to be ready,” Magistrate Murage stated.
The house girl had been left alone in the house on Monday November 3, 2025 when she stole the valuables.
The owner of the house on Nyando Close is a licensed firearm holder.
He told police he and his family had left their house for errands but when they returned they found the portable safe missing from his bedroom wardrobe.
The safe had the Glock pistol with two magazines, USD1,950, Euros600, Sh5,000 assorted jewelry, land titles and other electronics.
The woman escaped with the safe in a carton.
Security cameras at the compound captured her as she walked out with the carton.
The guards on duty said they thought she had been sent somewhere.
Police said they are making efforts to trace the weapon and cash.
