How To Change Your Username On Facebook

Your Facebook username is the unique link that helps people find your profile easily. It appears in your Facebook URL (for example, facebook.com/yourname) and can also make your account look more professional or personal. Changing your username is simple, whether you’re doing it on the app or desktop. Here’s how to change your username on Facebook correctly.

  1. Understand What a Username Is

A Facebook username is different from your display name. Your display name is what appears on your posts and messages, while your username is part of your profile link. It must be unique and can only contain letters, numbers, and periods — no spaces or special characters. Facebook also limits how often you can change it, so choose carefully before saving.

  1. Log In to Your Facebook Account

Start by logging in to your Facebook account using a web browser or the mobile app. Make sure you’re signed in to the correct profile, as you can’t change your username without access to your account settings.

  1. Change Username on Computer

If you’re using a computer, go to www.facebook.com and click your profile picture in the top right corner. Select Settings & privacy, then click Settings. From the left-hand menu, choose Accounts Center if you’re using the updated layout.

Click on Profiles, then select the profile you want to edit. Under Username, type your new desired username. Facebook will automatically check if the username is available. If it’s already taken, you’ll need to try another variation. Once you find an available option, click Save Changes.

  1. Change Username on Mobile App

If you’re using the Facebook app, tap the menu icon (three horizontal lines) at the top or bottom right corner of your screen. Scroll down and tap Settings & privacy, then select Settings. Tap See more in Accounts Center, then go to Profiles and choose your profile.

Tap Username and enter your new one. The app will show if it’s available. Once confirmed, tap Save to apply your new username.

  1. Review Username Rules

Facebook has a few important rules for usernames:

If your chosen username doesn’t meet these requirements, Facebook won’t allow you to save it.

  1. Confirm the Change

After saving your new username, Facebook may ask you to re-enter your password for security purposes. Once confirmed, your profile URL will update automatically. For example, if your new username is “johnsmith,” your new link will be facebook.com/johnsmith.

  1. Check and Share Your New Link

To make sure your change was successful, go to your profile and look at the URL in your browser or app. You can now share this new link with friends or use it on your business cards, websites, or social media pages.
