Kick-starting, or push-starting, a car is a technique used to start a manual transmission vehicle when the battery is dead or too weak to crank the engine. While it’s most commonly done in first or second gear, it is possible to do it in reverse under certain conditions. However, this method requires extra caution, as reversing while push-starting presents visibility and control challenges. Here is how to kick start a car in reverse.
- Ensure Safety First
Before attempting to kick-start the car in reverse, take necessary safety precautions.
- Park the car in a clear, open space with no obstacles behind you
- Ensure the ground is relatively flat or slightly sloped downward
- Make sure no one is directly behind the vehicle
- If you’re on a public road, turn on hazard lights and have someone signal traffic if needed
A safe environment is essential to prevent accidents while attempting this maneuver.
- Position the Car for Push-Starting
If the car is not already on a slope, you’ll need assistance to push it.
- Place the car in reverse gear while keeping the clutch pedal fully pressed
- Have one or more people ready to push the car backward
- If you’re on a downward slope, gravity can help move the car instead of relying on people to push
Having enough momentum is key for the engine to turn over when you release the clutch.
- Gain Enough Speed
To successfully kick-start the car, it needs to be moving at a decent speed.
- The car should reach around 8-10 km/h (5-6 mph)
- Keep the clutch pedal fully depressed while the car gains momentum
- Ensure the ignition key is in the “ON” position
If the car isn’t moving fast enough, the engine may not have enough force to start.
- Release the Clutch Smoothly
Once the car is moving at the right speed, engage the engine by releasing the clutch.
- Quickly but smoothly release the clutch pedal
- The engine should jerk slightly as it tries to turn over
- If successful, the engine will start running
- Immediately press the clutch again and give the engine a bit of throttle to keep it running
Releasing the clutch too harshly may cause the car to stall, while releasing too slowly may prevent the engine from turning over.
- Try Again if Necessary
If the engine does not start on the first attempt, repeat the process.
- Push the car back to a good starting position
- Ensure you have enough momentum before releasing the clutch again
- If the car still does not start, there may be a deeper mechanical or electrical issue
In such cases, it might be necessary to jump-start the battery or call for roadside assistance.
- Drive Normally and Recharge the Battery
Once the car is running, keep the engine on to allow the alternator to recharge the battery.
- Avoid turning off the engine until you reach a safe location
- Drive for at least 20-30 minutes to help recharge the battery
- If the battery continues to drain, it may need replacement
A weak or faulty battery may not hold a charge, requiring further troubleshooting.
