How To Make Bread Step By Step

Making bread at home is a rewarding process that fills your kitchen with a warm, comforting aroma and results in a fresh, delicious loaf. While there are different types of bread, a basic white or whole wheat bread follows a simple process involving mixing, kneading, proofing, and baking. Here is how to make bread step by step.

Ingredients

To make a basic loaf of bread, you will need:

Steps to Make Bread

  1. Activate the Yeast
In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes until it becomes foamy. This indicates that the yeast is active and ready to use.
  2. Mix the Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the activated yeast mixture and oil or melted butter. Stir with a wooden spoon until the dough starts to come together.
  3. Knead the Dough
Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8 to 10 minutes. Push the dough away with the heels of your hands, fold it over, and rotate it. The dough should become smooth and elastic. If it is too sticky, sprinkle a little more flour as needed.
  4. First Rise (Proofing)
Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 to 2 hours, or until it doubles in size.
  5. Shape the Dough
Once the dough has risen, punch it down gently to release the air. Transfer it to a floured surface, shape it into a loaf, and place it in a greased bread pan. Alternatively, shape it into rolls or a free-form loaf on a baking sheet.
  6. Second Rise
Cover the dough and let it rise again for about 30 to 45 minutes until it puffs up slightly. This second rise improves the texture and structure of the bread.
  7. Bake the Bread
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the bread for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  8. Cool and Serve
Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool in the pan for a few minutes before transferring it to a wire rack. Allow it to cool completely before slicing to prevent it from becoming gummy.
