How To Make Dumplings With Self-Raising Flour

Dumplings are a delicious addition to stews, soups, and casseroles, providing a soft and fluffy texture that soaks up the rich flavors of the dish. Using self-raising flour makes the process even easier, as it already contains a leavening agent, eliminating the need for baking powder. These dumplings can be made quickly with a few basic ingredients, making them perfect for a comforting meal. Here is how to make dumplings with self raising flour.

Ingredients

Steps to Make Dumplings

  1. Prepare the Dough
In a mixing bowl, combine the self-raising flour and salt. If you are using herbs, add them at this stage for extra flavor.
  2. Add the Butter
Cut the butter into small pieces and rub it into the flour mixture using your fingertips. Continue mixing until the texture resembles breadcrumbs.
  3. Add the Liquid
Slowly pour in the milk or water while stirring gently with a spoon or your hands. Mix until a soft dough forms, but avoid overworking it, as this can make the dumplings dense instead of fluffy.
  4. Shape the Dumplings
Divide the dough into small portions and roll them into balls, about the size of a golf ball.
  5. Cooking the Dumplings
    • For Stews and Soups: Drop the dumplings directly into the simmering liquid. Make sure there is enough space between them, as they will expand. Cover the pot with a lid and let them cook for about 15-20 minutes without lifting the lid, as this helps them steam properly.
    • For Boiling: Bring a pot of water or broth to a gentle boil and carefully add the dumplings. Cook for about 10-15 minutes until they are puffed up and cooked through.
    • For Steamed Dumplings: Place the dumplings in a greased steamer and steam for 20 minutes until fluffy.
  6. Serving
Once cooked, remove the dumplings and serve them hot with your favorite stew, soup, or gravy.
