How to Remove a Border in Word

When working on documents, borders can help highlight important sections or improve the overall design. However, there are times when they become unnecessary or make your document look cluttered. Understanding how to remove a border in Word is an essential skill that helps you keep your documents clean, professional, and easy to read. Whether the border surrounds text, a page, or a table, the process is straightforward once you know where to look.

  1. Remove a Border from Text or Paragraphs

If the border is applied to a specific block of text or paragraph, you can remove it directly from the Home tab.

Click anywhere inside the text with the border. Then go to the Home tab and locate the Borders icon in the Paragraph section. Click the dropdown arrow next to it and select No Border.

  1. Remove a Page Border

Sometimes, the border appears around the entire page instead of just text. In this case, you need to access the page border settings.

Go to the Design tab (or Page Layout in older versions). Click on Page Borders to open the settings window. Under the Page Border tab, select None, then click OK to remove it.

  1. Remove Borders from Tables

Tables often come with visible borders that you may want to hide for a cleaner look.

Click anywhere inside the table. Then go to the Table Design tab that appears. Find the Borders option and choose No Border from the dropdown menu.

  1. Use the Borders and Shading Tool

If the border doesn’t disappear using basic options, you can use the advanced settings.

Go to the Home tab, click the Borders dropdown, and select Borders and Shading. In the dialog box, choose None and apply the changes to the appropriate section such as text, paragraph, or whole document.

  1. Clear Formatting as a Last Option

If you’re unsure where the border is coming from, clearing formatting can help reset everything.

Highlight the affected text, go to the Home tab, and click Clear All Formatting (the icon with an eraser). This removes borders along with other styles.
