How to Remove Makeup Stains from Clothes

Makeup stains on clothes are a common problem, especially when getting ready in a hurry or during a busy day. Products like foundation, lipstick, and mascara can leave noticeable marks that seem difficult to remove. The good news is that learning how to remove makeup stains from clothes can help you deal with these mishaps quickly and effectively. With the right approach and a few household items, you can restore your clothes without damaging the fabric.

  1. Remove Excess Makeup First

Before applying any cleaning solution, gently remove any excess makeup from the fabric. Use a spoon, dull knife, or tissue to lift off as much product as possible.

Avoid rubbing the stain, as this can push it deeper into the fibers and spread it further.

  1. Blot the Stain with a Clean Cloth

If the makeup is still fresh, blot the area with a clean, dry cloth or paper towel. This helps absorb as much of the product as possible before treatment.

Blotting is more effective than rubbing and helps keep the stain contained.

  1. Apply Dish Soap or Liquid Detergent

Makeup products often contain oils, so dish soap or liquid laundry detergent works well to break them down.

Apply a small amount directly onto the stain and gently rub it in using your fingers or a soft brush. Let it sit for about 10 minutes.

  1. Rinse and Repeat if Necessary

Rinse the stained area with warm water and check if the stain is still visible. If needed, repeat the cleaning process until the makeup is completely removed.

Some stubborn stains, like lipstick, may require more than one treatment.

  1. Wash and Air Dry the Garment

Once the stain is gone, wash the clothing as usual according to the care label instructions. This removes any remaining residue and refreshes the fabric.

Allow the garment to air dry and check again before using a dryer, as heat can set any leftover stain.
