The Ugandan government is now offering free land to investors with innovative information and communication technology business initiatives, as a way of encouraging investment in the ICT sector in Uganda. This is encouraging and follows the step US government giving special Visas to innovators.

The senior investment executive at Uganda Investments Authority (UIA), Mr John Musajjakawa, urged experts in the mobile communication industry  experts and academia who dream of setting up businesses in the sector to ask UIA for the land on offer.

He is saying that Ugandan government wants more of local companies but don’t discriminate any other companies so long as they qualify. Uganda is wooing a group of mobile communication experts who gathered for the first meeting of Mobile Monday Kampala, a new association of people in the mobile industry, academia and device users.

The land on offer is part of the 26 acres in the 25 industrial business parks which the government has allocated to investors. The parks are located in Mbarara, Mbale, Soroti, Lira, Gulu, Lira, Arua and Kampala. To buy the land one is expected to pay at least $80,000 (about Shs150 million) for 0.4 acres to 30 acres.

Mr John Musajjakawa said the government will consider investors with viable investments to avoid giving land to those who want to grab the land for misuse. Anyone with intelligent business projects can come,” he said.
