Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja Thursday ordered an immediate inquiry into a security incident that occurred on Wednesday during the National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) event in Wajir County.
The event was attended by President William Ruto.
During the event, a man breached the security guards’ cordon and dashed to the main dais as the president gave his speech. It took the efforts of the hawk eyed security officers to grab him and fall to the ground inches from the president.
The president was heard telling both the security man and intruder sorry because of the presumed injuries.
The man was whisked away for grilling. He told police he wanted to get money from Ruto and did not pose any danger to him. He added he wants to be an MCA in the area.
In a statement, the National Police Service (NPS) confirmed the incident but assured the public that at no time was the safety of the President, other dignitaries, or members of the public compromised.
“The Presidential Security Team and other officers on the ground acted with the utmost professionalism and speed to de-escalate the situation and restore order,” the statement read.
Police said the individual involved in the incident was swiftly apprehended, allowing the event to proceed without further interruption.
Inspector General Kanja has since constituted a special team to conduct an inquiry into the matter within three days. The team is expected to establish whether there were any procedural gaps that may have contributed to the breach and recommend immediate remedial measures.
The National Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all Kenyans.
The statement was issued by Police Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga.
Thursday’s incident was the second in less than a month and during the Nyota visits.
