Jalang’o Declares Interest in Nairobi Senate Seat Ahead of 2027 Polls

Lang’ata Member of Parliament Phelix Oduor, popularly known as Jalang’o, has announced plans to contest the Nairobi senatorial seat in the 2027 General Election.
His declaration sets the stage for a possible political contest with current Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, who is also the Secretary General of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
Speaking during an interview on Radio 47’s breakfast show on Tuesday, Jalang’o said the decision to seek the seat is his own and is based on his political experience and close interaction with Nairobi residents.
The first-term MP said he believes he understands the needs of the city after moving around, listening to people, and engaging with different communities across Nairobi.
Jalang’o dismissed claims that he had been sent by President William Ruto to vie for the seat, saying no one dictates political ambitions.
“I have not been sent by President Ruto to run for Nairobi senator. This is my personal decision. In politics, no one chooses a seat for you,” he said.
He reaffirmed his loyalty to ODM, saying he would seek the party’s ticket if he officially enters the race.
“I am a member of ODM, and if I run, I will do so on an ODM ticket,” Jalang’o stated.
The Lang’ata MP also said coalition politics will play a major role in the 2027 elections, noting that he will support any coalition that includes ODM.
He further expressed support for ODM remaining part of the broad-based government, saying it is difficult for one party to form government on its own.
Jalang’o entered politics in 2022 and won the Lang’ata parliamentary seat on an ODM ticket.
