Jan Kacper Bednarek is a Polish professional footballer who plays as a centre-back.
Born on 12 April 1996 in Słupca, Poland, he stands 1.89 metres tall and has become a regular for the Poland national team.
He currently plays for Primeira Liga club FC Porto, having joined the Portuguese side in the summer of 2025.
Raised in a sports-oriented family in the Kleczew area, where his father Daniel directed the local sports and recreation centre and his mother Beata worked as a physical education teacher, Bednarek developed his game from an early age.
Siblings
Jan has one sibling, his older brother Filip Bednarek.
Filip was born on 26 September 1992, also in Słupca, making him nearly four years older than Jan.
Filip is a professional goalkeeper who currently plays for Dutch Eredivisie club Sparta Rotterdam.
The brothers grew up together in Kleczew, training initially at the local club Sokół Kleczew, and maintained a close, supportive relationship throughout their careers.
As a young player Jan even tried goalkeeping himself before deciding it was “too boring” and moving into defence.
Career
Bednarek began his youth career at Sokół Kleczew before moving to MSP Szamotuły and then joining the Lech Poznań academy.
He made his senior Ekstraklasa debut for Lech Poznań in September 2013 at the age of 17.

Returning to Lech, he established himself in the first team during the 2016–17 campaign.
In July 2017 he transferred to English Premier League club Southampton, where he spent eight seasons and made more than 250 appearances in all competitions.
He featured regularly in the Premier League, experienced relegation and promotion (including Championship play-off success), and had a short loan spell at Aston Villa in the first half of the 2022–23 season.
In July 2025 he moved to FC Porto on a four-year contract for a reported fee of around €7.5 million, taking the number 5 shirt and quickly becoming a key figure in the defence.
Internationally he has earned more than 70 caps for Poland since his debut in 2017, appearing at the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups as well as UEFA Euro 2020 and Euro 2024.
Accolades
With Lech Poznań, Bednarek was part of the squad that won the Ekstraklasa title in the 2014–15 season and the Polish Super Cup in 2016.
He was named Polish Newcomer of the Year in 2016.
For Southampton he contributed to promotion from the Championship via the play-offs.
At Porto he has claimed individual recognition, including multiple Primeira Liga Defender of the Month awards during the 2025–26 season, and the club secured the Portuguese league title that year along with the Portuguese Super Cup in 2026.
On the international stage his most memorable moment came when he scored the winning goal in Poland’s 1–0 victory over Japan at the 2018 World Cup.
