    Joanna Kulig is a renowned Polish actress and singer, celebrated for her versatile performances in film, television, theater, and music.

    Born on June 24, 1982, in Krynica, Poland, she has gained international acclaim for her ability to perform in multiple languages, including English, French, and German.

    Raised in a musical family, Kulig’s early exposure to singing and performing shaped her artistic path, leading her to become one of Poland’s most influential figures in cinema.

    In 2018, Polish magazine Wprost named her among the 50 most influential Poles for her contributions to the industry.

    Joanna has one sibling, a sister named Justyna Schneider who was born on 16 March 1985.

    She is an actress, known for Colors of Evil: Red (2024), Television Theater (1953) and Supermarket (2012).

    Career

    Kulig’s career began with singing aspirations.

    After studying piano and voice, she participated in talent shows, winning third prize in the finale of Szansa na sukces (A Chance for Success) in 1998.

    She later attempted a jazz singing career but faced rejections, prompting her to enroll at the AST National Academy of Theatre Arts in Kraków, where she graduated in 2007 with a specialization in singing.

    She made her stage debut while still in drama school and quickly transitioned to film.

    Her breakthrough came with the 2007 drama Wednesday, Thursday Morning, earning her the Best Debut award at the Gdynia Film Festival.

    Kulig became a frequent collaborator with director Paweł Pawlikowski, appearing in films such as The Woman in the Fifth (2011), Ida (2013), Cold War (2018), and Fatherland (2026).

    Her role as Zula in Cold War marked her international breakthrough, showcasing her singing and acting talents.

    She has starred in major Polish hits like Pitbull: Tough Women (2016) and Clergy (2018), as well as international projects including Netflix’s The Eddy (2020), Kompromat (2022), She Came to Me (2023), and Knox Goes Away (2023).

    On television, she led the sitcom Don’t Worry About Me and appeared in series like Hanna.

    Kulig continues to balance film, stage, and music, with plans for her debut studio album.

    Accolades

    Kulig is the recipient of a European Film Award for Best Actress for her performance in Cold War (2018).

    She has also won two Polish Film Awards (Orły), including Best Actress for Cold War and Best Supporting Actress for Elles (2011).

    Additional accolades include the Best Debut award at the Gdynia Film Festival for her first major film role and various festival prizes, such as Best Actress at the El Gouna Film Festival.

    Her work has been celebrated at prestigious events like the Cannes Film Festival, and she has served on juries for major film gatherings.
