Jonathan Bryan Toews is a Canadian professional ice hockey centre who was born on April 29, 1988, in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Nicknamed “Captain Serious” for his intense focus and leadership style, he is widely regarded as one of the premier two-way forwards of his generation.
Toews played the bulk of his NHL career with the Chicago Blackhawks, serving as their captain from 2008 until 2023, before later joining the Winnipeg Jets.
He comes from a close-knit family and grew up in Winnipeg, where he developed his passion for the game on backyard rinks.
Siblings
Jonathan has one sibling, a younger brother named David Toews.
David, born in 1990, followed a similar path in hockey, attending Shattuck-Saint Mary’s boarding school and playing for the University of North Dakota.
He was drafted by the New York Islanders in 2008 and briefly joined the Blackhawks organization through a trade, but he did not enjoy a lengthy NHL career like his brother.
The two brothers often competed against each other in their youth, sharpening their skills on local rinks in Winnipeg.
Career
Toews rose to prominence through elite amateur programs, including Shattuck-Saint Mary’s, before committing to the University of North Dakota.

He left college after two standout seasons to join the NHL, where the Blackhawks had selected him third overall in the 2006 entry draft.
He made his NHL debut in the 2007-08 season and quickly assumed the captaincy at age 20, becoming one of the youngest captains in league history.
Under his leadership, the Blackhawks transformed into a dynasty.
Toews excelled as a complete player, known for his faceoff prowess, defensive reliability, and clutch scoring.
He spent 15 seasons with Chicago, helping rebuild the franchise into a perennial contender.
After his time with the Blackhawks, Toews returned to his hometown roots by signing with the Winnipeg Jets.

Accolades
Toews won the Stanley Cup three times with the Blackhawks in 2010, 2013, and 2015.
In 2010, he captured the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP, becoming one of the youngest players to achieve that feat.
He also earned the Frank J. Selke Trophy as the NHL’s top defensive forward in 2013 and the Mark Messier Leadership Award in 2015.
On the international stage, Toews secured Olympic gold medals with Canada in 2010 and 2014, winning tournament MVP honors in Vancouver.
He is a member of the Triple Gold Club, having won the Stanley Cup, an Olympic gold, and a World Championship.
In 2017, he was named one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players in history.
