Suna East MP Junet Mohamed has launched fresh accusations over the handling of funds meant for ODM election agents during the 2022 General Election, alleging that former President Uhuru Kenyatta and his brother Muhoho Kenyatta took control of the money and failed to deploy or pay agents.
In a press statement , Junet, a close ally of ODM leader the late Raila Odinga, was responding to claims by Nairobi Senator and ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, who had challenged him to explain why agents were allegedly absent or unpaid during the last election.
Junet claimed that former President Kenyatta released the funds intended for ODM agents to Muhoho Kenyatta, who in turn appointed a man identified as Peter Mburu to oversee recruitment and payment.
According to Junet, Mburu presented himself as an IT expert capable of safeguarding the vote from manipulation by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), but ultimately failed to deliver agents on the ground.
“To date, Mr. Mburu remains an aide of Uhuru Kenyatta,” Junet said, adding that Mburu recently travelled to Nigeria with Kenyatta and Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, which he said demonstrated his continued proximity to the former president.
The ODM legislator further alleged that the operations were run from a highly restricted office in Westlands, Nairobi, which he claimed was inaccessible even to Raila Odinga, the party’s presidential candidate at the time.
“It is from this office that they claimed to handle agents’ payments and other logistics,” Junet said, insisting that no agents were eventually procured for Odinga’s campaign, either in Mt Kenya or in Nyanza regions.
Junet challenged Uhuru Kenyatta, Muhoho Kenyatta, and Peter Mburu to publicly deny the allegations.
He also dismissed claims that he betrayed Raila Odinga, arguing that Odinga would not have appointed him Leader of Minority in the National Assembly if there had been any loss of trust.
“For years, I handled delicate assignments for our late dear party leader with fidelity and diligence,” Junet said.
The MP called on all those named, including Senator Sifuna, to “come clean” on the handling of agents’ funds, saying Kenyans deserved clarity on who controlled and allegedly mishandled the money and who should bear responsibility for ODM’s loss in the 2022 presidential race.
Neither Uhuru Kenyatta, Muhoho Kenyatta, Peter Mburu nor Senator Sifuna had responded to the allegations by the time of publication.
