Nation’s Journalist, Walter Menya

Journalists will on Monday protest in a show of solidarity with Nation Media Group journalist Walter Menya who was arrested on Sunday.

The protest organised by Kenya Union of Journalists (KUJ) will begin outside Nation Centre, Nairobi.

KUJ Secretary General Eric Oduor, argued that Menya was set up.

“All journalists must come out to say no to intimidation and show solidarity with Walter Menya who was arrested after a setup.”

Nation said Menya was arrested following a story he did for the Sunday Nation.

In a statement, the media house protested intimidation of journalists following the treatment of its writer.

“We are seeking facts from the investigating authorities to enable us take appropriate action,” Clifford Machoka, head of corporate affairs, said.

Police spokesman George Kinoti, in a statement, said Menya is accused of soliciting money to kill the said story.

He said the journalist will be taken to court but did not specify the charges.

National Police Service statement on Walter’s case

However, the police are yet to reveal the complainant in the case.

In the Sunday Nation this week, Mr Menya wrote a story about the Friends of Jubilee Foundation through which senior civil servants are illegally participating in the campaigns.

Nation Media Group, through a spokesman, said the circumstances surrounding Mr Menya’s arrest were unclear and they were waiting for further information from the police.

“We wish to reaffirm our commitment to press freedoms and zero tolerance on any unethical behavior in accordance with our editorial policy. We request quick clarification on the facts surrounding Mr Menya’s arrest and thank all our readers and stakeholders for their continued loyalty and support,” said Mr Clifford Machoka, Head of Corporate and Regulatory Affairs.

Kenyans took to social media where they condemned the arrest and intimidation of media workers.

The journalist will be arraigned in court today.
