While details about her sisters are less documented, her brothers, Sean and Joe Walsh, are known to be filmmakers, contributing to the creative legacy of the Walsh family.

The siblings were raised together in Tucson, Arizona, after the family moved from San Jose.

Their mother, Angela, a breast cancer survivor, played a significant role in fostering independence among her children, especially after the family faced financial challenges following a divorce.

Career

Walsh’s journey began in the 1980s as a model and English teacher in Japan before she transitioned to acting.

In Chicago, she honed her craft with the Piven Theatre Workshop and the Chicago Shakespeare Repertory, performing in plays like Happy Birthday Wanda June and Troilus and Cressida.

She later moved to New York City, joining the improvisational comedy troupe Burn Manhattan and appearing in Off-Broadway productions.

Walsh’s television breakthrough came in 1997 with her role as Nicki Fifer on The Drew Carey Show, where she wore a fatsuit to portray Drew Carey’s girlfriend.

She went on to appear in shows like Homicide: Life on the Street, Law & Order, and The Norm Show.

Her defining moment came in 2005 when she was cast as Dr. Addison Montgomery in Grey’s Anatomy.

The character, initially intended for a brief arc, became a fan favorite, leading to a spin-off series, Private Practice (2007–2013), where Walsh starred as the neonatal surgeon for six seasons.

Walsh’s career continued to flourish with roles in critically acclaimed series.

From 2017 to 2019, she portrayed Olivia Baker in 13 Reasons Why, earning praise for her emotional depth in a role considered the “best work” of her career.

She also played the enigmatic Handler in The Umbrella Academy (2019–2024) and Madeline Wheeler in Emily in Paris.

Her film credits include The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012), Girls Trip (2017), and Honest Thief (2020).

Beyond acting, Walsh made her Off-Broadway debut in 2010 with Dusk Rings a Bell, earning rave reviews for her performance.

She also founded Boyfriend LLC, launching a successful fragrance line that became a top seller at Sephora.

In 2006, Walsh shared a Satellite Award for Best Ensemble Cast: Television with the Grey’s Anatomy cast.

In 2007, she won a Screen Actors’ Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series for the same show.

She was nominated again in the same category in 2008. For her role in Private Practice, Walsh earned a 2011 People’s Choice Award nomination for Favorite TV Drama Actress.

Her theater work also garnered acclaim, with nominations for a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Play and a Drama League Award for Distinguished Performance for her role in the Off-Broadway play If I Forget in 2017.
