Lieutenant Colonel Paul Njuguna is now a Colonel and will be in charge while Obonyo focuses on his studies.
There has apparently been plans to replace Obonyo for a while now.
According to sources, Njuguna is capable of taking charge since he has been working under Colonel Obonyo for close to three years now.

“Njuguna has been deputizing Obonyo for a while now so it is right for him to hold fort,” the sources said.
The reshuffle in the force saw Major General Robert Kibochi become Lieutenant General and Lieutenant General Leonard Ngondi moved to the National Defence College as a commandant.
Lieutenant General Johson Ondieki was promoted to force commander for the United Nations Mission in South Sudan and Brigadier Aden Mulata named Assistant Chief of Defence Forces in charge of operations, training and doctrine.
