The Kenya tourism board last week unveiled Eddy Kenzo, Ugandan, as their ambassador, a move was ill received by local celebrities and Kenyans as a whole.
Many felt that Kenya would be better represented by local celebrities, athletes or even the Kenya 7s team.
Kennedy Ombima, popularly known as King Kaka was just like many Kenyans, not pleased by KTB’s move. The King had this to say on social media:
“Ati Eddy Kenzo who is Ugandan is The Kenya Tourism Ambassador, acha tungoje Beyonce akuje aimbe National anthem yetu. Let me grab my popcorns this is a movie a very funny movie. Ufala. Si wapatie Nameless ama Wyre ama Mkenya random kwa streets.
How about the whole Rugby Team who have been doing soo much to raise our flag high, I am sure ata hajui independence yetu Ni lini ata nimeenda mbali, ata colours zaflag yetu. Ufala. Kesho kesho Vice President atatolewa Zimbabwe.” Rabbit lamented
Kenya Tourism board on Monday responded to the critics saying:
The first phase of the two- part influencer campaign strategy is currently underway in India, Uganda, Tanzania and will subsequently be rolled out in Nigeria, South Africa as well as other international markets.
The second phase of the campaign will incorporate domestic influencers primarily Kenyan athlete and celebrities who have, and are breaking ground in international and regional markets.
KTB has also been leveraging international celebrities, influencers and key opinion leaders to drive Magical Kenya’s visibility abroad. These include: Mark Zuckerberg, Hu Bing , SWV and Blackstreet.
It seems like Kenyans will have to wait for the second phase. Talk about Kenyans playing second fiddle.
