Kenya will hold free and fair elections in 2027, DP Kindiki Assures
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has assured development partners and the international community that the country will hold free and fair elections in 2027, reiterating its commitment to constitutional requirements and existing laws.
Prof. Kindiki said Kenya is a democratic country with a long history of holding elections as scheduled in the Constitution noting that the tradition will continue with the next polls.
“We want to assure our partners that the Government of Kenya under President Ruto believes in democracy, rule of law and all the other things that underpin our constitutional order. We want to assure the world that Kenya will have free, fair and verifiable elections next year,” DP stated.
The Second in Command spoke on Wednesday when he co-chaired the 15th Development Partnership Forum (DPF) at the Official Residence in Karen, Nairobi.
The Forum was attended by co-chairs United Nations Resident Coordinator, Dr. Garry Conille and Germany Ambassador to Kenya Sebastian Groth. Also present were Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, respective Cabinet Secretaries and Principal Secretaries, representatives of various international and humanitarian agencies and members of independent offices and commissions among others.
“The election will be held on schedule and will be fair and without any shortcuts because we pride ourselves as a democratic nation that believes in the rule of law, democracy, human rights and holding periodic elections,” DP emphasized.
The Deputy President encouraged the partners interested in participating in the elections to go ahead and do so within the established electoral processes.
“There will be no compromise on the credibility of the election. I invite the development partners who would wish to engage in the space of democracy and elections to do so using formal procedures and channels either by supporting the referee—which is an independent body— or supporting the vibrant civil society or as election observers,” he added.
Ahead of the polls, Prof. Kindiki further said Kenyans will continue to enjoy the freedoms guaranteed by the law underscoring the country’s democratic ideals.
“Kenya is a very vibrant democracy. We take a lot of pride in our democratic credentials. Looking around the traditional and social media, Kenya is a place for open and democratic engagement,” DP reiterated.
Mr. Mudavadi underlined the commitment declaring that the country is known for holding elections as per its Constitution saying the tradition will continue with the coming polls.
“We have had a tradition of ensuring our elections are held on schedule. We do not intend to breach the tradition we have already established. We will have elections on schedule and will be constitutional,” he said.
At the same time, Prof. Kindiki called on the partners to support ongoing preparations to combat forecasted El Nino rains expected in the country from October.
The DP said a multi-agency preparedness team is in place promising to engage the partners on how they could boost the efforts.
“I call upon the development partners to see whether they can re-programme some of their resources around humanitarian and resilience programmes to help us converge efforts on preparations to mitigate loss and damage,” he urged.
The 15th DPF focused on Youth and Development and the best way to leverage the partnership to improve the lives of millions of young people through targeted programmes and projects.
“We must ensure that our development partnerships translate into tangible opportunities for young Kenyans through employment, entrepreneurship, skills development, access to finance, innovation and participation in the digital economy,” DP stated.
Prof. Kindiki said empowerment initiatives including National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA), Kenya Jobs and Economic Transformation (KJET), Kazi Kwa Ground, Kazi Mtandaoni and Kazi Majuu have opened doors for hundreds of thousands of the youth who have acquired jobs.
“We are advancing an employment strategy designed to equip young people with relevant skills, expand access to jobs and enterprise opportunities, and position them to participate meaningfully in Kenya’s economic transformation,” he said.
