Upon his return to Kenya, Sheikh Athman served as Deputy Administrator at Madrasatul Munawwarah in Majengo, Mombasa.

He also taught Islamic Religious Education and Kiswahili at Ronald Ngala Primary School.

In January 2005, he was appointed Kadhi of Mombasa.

He later served in Kwale and Nairobi before being elevated to Chief Kadhi of Kenya.
