Mombasa Governor, Ali Hassan Joho and his Kilifi counterpart, Amason Kingi boycotted the Council of Governors (CoG) meeting, first one after the August 8 election being held in Kwale.

But the Mombasa county boss has said that he was chairing his first cabinet meeting since taking oath of office.

”Today I chaired my first cabinet meeting for my second term to lay out strategies for development and service to the people of our County. From now it is all systems go,” he said.

President Uhuru Kenyatta who was opening the meeting warned governors against secession noting that his government will guard the country’s territorial integrity as well as the property and lives of Kenyans.

The two ODM governors in November called for self determination of the coast for development purposes and to protest against Uhuru’s government. They claimed that the Jubilee and other past regimes have marginalized the coastal people.

“The journey to realize secession for the coastal people has just began,” Joho said, adding that consultations were on.

”If people decide to ignore our voices we must look for another way for our voices to be heard. As you all know, the past governments and the Jubilee administration have refused to listen to the voice of the coastal people,” he added.

Kenyatta also said that county and national governments were not in competition but should instead compliment each other.

On Tuesday, Mombasa politicians urged Joho to work closely with Uhuru’s government for the sake of political relevance come 2022.
