KMPDU Chair Chibanzi Mwachonda Among 86 Medics Sacked By Mombasa County Gov’t

Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists’ Union (KMPDU) Chairman Chibanzi Mwachonda is among 86 doctors fired by the Mombasa County Government over gross misconduct for refusal to resume duty.

In a letter signed by county secretary Jeizan Faruk, Governor Hassan Joho’s administration relieved of their duties 86 striking workers for boycotting duty.

“Following the correspondence shared between the Department of Health and the County Public Service Board on the doctors strike, the Board, pursuant to Section 59 (1) (c) of the County Governments Act number 17 of 2012, hereby conveys its decision via Special Board meeting held on January 5, 2021 that all the doctors who have failed, refused and/or neglected to return to work be dismissed from county services as provided for under Section 44 (4) (a), (c) and (e) of the Employment Act 2007 which constitute justifiable or lawful grounds for the dismissal as highlighted in the Act,” the letter reads.

The affected physicians and senior specialists were further instructed to handover property belonging to the county to their supervisors.

“Update us on the progress of the dissemination of the letters, handover, and staff return for each of the facilities,” said Faruk.

On Tuesday, governors rejected a return to work formula for doctors which was reached in December following President Uhuru Kenyatta’s intervention.

Council of Governors (CoG) chairperson, Wycliffe Oparanya said they were not consulted, adding that there was no budgetary allocation to cater for the deal.

As a result, clinical officers issued a 48-hour strike notice.

“It is with utmost shock that we learned of the letter by the COG Chair Wycliffe Oparanya to the CS Health distancing themselves from the RTWF that was given a clean bill of health by the President.

“We presume this is a call to extend the strike by the CoG,” Kenya Union of Clinical Officers (KUCO) General Secretary George Gibore said.
