KNEC Announces One-Week Online Training for Teachers

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has announced a one-week special training programme for teachers and teacher educators.

In a notice issued on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, KNEC Chief Executive Officer David Njengere said the training aims to improve the quality of classroom and national assessments.

KNEC said it is mandated to set and maintain national examination and assessment standards at school, post-school and teacher education levels. The training will help strengthen teachers’ skills in developing quality assessment tools.

“To uphold these standards and support effective evaluation of learner competencies, KNEC invites qualified teachers and teacher educators to apply for a one-week online training in item writing,” the notice said.

The training will begin on April 20, 2026, and will focus on developing high-quality test items under the Competency-Based Assessment system. Participants who complete the training will receive certificates and may be considered for future assignments with KNEC as contracted professionals.

To qualify, applicants must be trained teachers or subject specialists currently teaching in primary schools (Grades 1 to 6), junior schools (Grades 7 to 9), or senior schools handling Grade 10. The programme also targets trainers in teacher training colleges and those involved in stage-based curricula, including special needs education.

Applicants must have at least three years of teaching experience, relevant academic and professional qualifications, and must be registered with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC). They must also be recommended by their head of institution.

KNEC said applicants should have a strong professional record and be familiar with the curriculum designs in their subject areas.

Applications should be submitted online through the KNEC portal at markingapp.knec.ac.ke and must be received by April 13, 2026.

Further details are available on the KNEC website. The council noted that teachers who have already undergone similar training should not apply. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
